Team Overview

The Chief Engineer will be a key leader of the product development team focused on developing and launching lidar systems. You will be the overall technical leader and decision-maker within the project responsible for the engineering planning, execution, and delivery. Additionally, you will act as an engineering interface for internal stakeholders while managing the cross-functional development team. You will leverage or lead Luminar’s platform design to establish/improve the customer relationship in addition to promoting advanced technologies and new business opportunities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the cross-functional engineering team for project execution.
  • Interface as technical project responsible person directly w/ customer as primary escalation path.
  • Moderate technical discussions while analyzing trade-offs to drive technical decisions.
  • Define and control technical project scope according to internal/customer requirements. Responsible for engineering change management within the project including technical decision making and cost/recovery management.
  • Lead technical risk management and mitigation activities.
  • Coordinate Simultaneous Engineering activities with Operations and Manufacturing to meet Operations goals and Design For Manufacturability (DFM) expectations.
  • Report project progress to internal/external stakeholders and support management reviews.
  • Promote positive employee morale within the project by mentoring/empowering employee(s) and facilitating development plans together with direct supervisor.
  • Operate independently to drive key initiatives for the business.
  • Ensure on-time / on-quality project delivery.
  • Provide customer technical vision to Luminar’s platform and product roadmap

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ year experience in electronic product development and launch
  • Automotive OEM or Tier 1 technical experience on ADAS/AD Sensors (Camera, Radar, LiDAR)
  • Recognized technical expertise on electronics, embedded software, electro mechanics, or optics
  • Ability to lead technical discussions with customers and collaborate in team environments
  • STEM degree including but not limited to engineering, computer science, or a related field

Preferred Qualifications

  • System engineering background
  • International global team management experience
  • IATF, ISO26262, Cyber Security, ASPICE

At Luminar, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays a base between $140,000 and $215,000 per year. Within this range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. You will also be eligible to receive other benefits including: equity in the form of restricted stock unit awards, comprehensive medical and dental coverage, 401k plan, life and disability benefits, flexible time off, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement for formal education related to advancing your career at Luminar. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire and schedule type.
