Team Overview

The mission of the Hardware Engineering Project Manager within Luminar is to manage the delivery of innovative, high performance, high reliability, low-cost electronics and electronic assemblies that meet or exceed customer expectations. The Hardware Engineering Project Manager will be a key member of the Product Development team focusing on cross-functional deliveries for our embedded hardware development for our market leading Lidar sensors.


  • Create, monitor and control timelines and content for the technical deliverables of hardware within the product development team. Responsible for keeping the timeline aligned with the customer, program and/or platform schedule.
  • Work in conjunction with the Functional Project Lead to create a work breakdown structure (WBS) and effort estimation (resource & duration) for work packages.
  • Communicate cross-functional dependencies and need dates to the Customer Program Manager and respective engineering leads.
  • Identify and resolve resource conflicts with functional managers and other Engineering Program Managers as necessary.
  • Maintain a risk register, plan risk mitigation strategies and escalate risks in a timely manner.
  • Track and report on project Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) at regular intervals.
  • Set up appropriate internal technical meetings to discuss progress, issues, blockers and outlook and provide guidance to the technical teams on critical path for work products.
  • Be an advocate of the product development process with the technical teams, encourage engineering best practices to be followed to make sound technical decisions.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS in a STEM discipline including but not limited to Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or Optical Engineering
  • 7+ years of working experience with at least 2 years in Project or Program Management roles.
  • Design experience with LiDAR sensors or within the automotive industry (OEM or Tier 1).
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams comprised of engineering, production, sourcing, material management, and quality.
  • Experience interfacing with customers and great attention to detail and business acumen
  • Great communication and organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • PMP or PMI professional certification
  • MBA or Master's in Program Management
  • 10+ years of working experience with at least 2 years in Project or Program Management roles.
  • Experience working in ADAS or Autonomous Vehicle projects
  • Knowledge of IATF16949 Automotive Quality Management standards.
  • Experience working with Agile
  • Working knowledge of ISO 26262, 14229, or 15031 and ASPICE and IATF processes
  • Design For Six Sigma, DMAIC, Lean Six Sigma, or Shanin Red X certified

At Luminar, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays a base between $102,000 and $167,000* per year. Within this range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. You will also be eligible to receive other benefits including: equity in the form of restricted stock unit awards, comprehensive medical and dental coverage, 401k plan, life and disability benefits, flexible time off, paid parental leave, and tuition reimbursement for formal education related to advancing your career at Luminar. The specific programs and options available to an employee may vary depending on date of hire and schedule type.
