Manager, Operations Engineering
Carbon
We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Operations Engineering Manager to lead our critical Manufacturing, Process, and Quality Engineering teams. This leadership role is central to ensuring the high quality and efficient production of our additive manufacturing platform and its associated accessories. You will be responsible for driving a culture of continuous improvement, leveraging data-driven analysis to solve complex problems, and maintaining exceptional quality standards throughout the supply chain and production lifecycle. This is a hands-on role requiring a deep technical background and a passion for leading teams in a fast-paced, high-tech environment.
What You Will Do
Team Leadership and Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Manufacturing Engineers, Process Engineers, and Quality Engineers.
- Foster a collaborative, data-driven, and continuous improvement culture within Operations and across the broader organization.
- Manage team priorities, resource allocation, and project timelines to meet operational goals.
Quality and Process Engineering
- Own and drive all aspects of product quality for both incoming supply chain components and final system assembly.
- Implement and optimize manufacturing and assembly processes for efficiency, repeatability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Quality Management System (QMS) procedures and documentation (e.g., control plans, FMEAs, work instructions).
- Ensure processes comply with relevant industry standards and internal quality requirements.
Root Cause Analysis and Continuous Improvement
- Be the technical expert and escalation point for complex yield, defect, and reliability issues.
- Champion the use of Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, and statistical methods for root cause analysis (RCA) and corrective action implementation (8D, 5 Whys, Fishbone).
- Utilize Manufacturing Execution System (MES) data and other analytical tools to identify process bottlenecks and opportunities for improvement.
- Drive projects to reduce scrap, increase first-pass yield, and improve overall operational efficiency (OEE).
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Collaborate closely with Supply Chain to ensure the consistent quality of parts from our global supply base.
- Act as a critical link between Operations, Product Management, and R&D Engineering to ensure design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and smooth product transitions from NPI (New Product Introduction) to high-volume production.
- Communicate technical issues, project status, and quality metrics clearly and effectively to all levels of the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or a related technical field). A Master's degree in Engineering is a plus
- 8+ years of experience in a manufacturing or operations engineering environment, preferably within high-tech hardware, capital equipment, or additive manufacturing.
- 3+ years of experience managing a team of engineers.
- Deep technical understanding of manufacturing processes (e.g., CNC machining, precision assembly, complex electromechanical systems). Specific experience in additive manufacturing or optical assembly is a plus.
- Proven expertise in Statistical Process Control (SPC), Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R), and other quality methodologies.
- Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to use data to drive decisions and solve complex, ambiguous problems.
- Demonstrated ability to be technical and hands-on, actively participating in problem-solving on the production floor.
