Help us change the world and we will help you change yours.

Working at the intersection of hardware, software, and molecular science, we are committed to delivering on the promise of 3D printing, enabling commercial customers to go beyond basic prototyping to 3D manufacturing.

Our company is built on the idea that when diverse fields of study come together, we are able to solve challenging problems. You will be joining a diverse team with a dynamic culture, where team success is as important as celebrating individual contributions. We pride ourselves in developing an environment where we all can teach, learn, and grow together.

The Role

As a Staff Mechanical Engineer, you will help us design and build new groundbreaking additive manufacturing solutions ranging from new printers to new ways to clean parts. As a member of a tight-knit hardware team, you'd contribute ideas and develop practical solutions to an evolving list of never before seen challenges. Your work will help ensure that we deliver great products and delight our customers while changing the world of additive manufacturing.

In addition to contributing your talents to designs of complex assemblies, you would also be expected to coach, mentor, and if needed, informally manage younger engineers.

Note: This role is based in our Redwood City office and requires a hybrid at home/in office engagement with a minimum of 3 days a week in office.

Skills and requirements:

Requirements for consideration

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical degree.
  • 7+ years experience successfully taking mechanical designs from concept to production.

You are:

  • Experienced leading team projects: You’ve led projects from concept to completion and within tight schedule constraints. Your teammates have come to rely on you as a technical leader and mentor. You would also be comfortable growing into a future management role.
  • Able to communicate: You are comfortable making presentations and communicating appropriately to audiences as varied from the design group to executive staff. You have the ability to present your designs and answer questions in a dynamic environment.
  • A motivated questioner: You seek out information from other teams and consolidate that into a thoughtful set of requirements and tests. You bring careful consideration for performance, usability, reliability, cost and manufacturability to all of your work.
  • Confident in your design skills: You are experienced in CAD modeling programs and are comfortable using and sharing FEA and appropriate levels of technical analysis when optimizing. You are also well versed in a wide variety of manufacturing techniques such as sheet metal fabrication, plastic injection molding, casting, and CNC machining.
  • Hands-on: We aren’t just designers here; we assemble, test and debug our prototypes. You should love to get your hands dirty (and hopefully wash them afterwards).
  • Caring about the growth of others: You enjoy and have skill in coaching and mentoring others and find deep satisfaction in seeing others grow. Sometimes this means you take more of a servant role to those on your team because it’s what is best for the project and the group.

What you will be doing:

  • Designing: You will be creating our next generation of products directly alongside our diverse team of engineers. You will be responsible for ensuring your project stays on track and on budget.
  • Testing: Conduct tests to ensure the functionality and reliability of your designs as they integrate to the full architecture. Those tests are not just mechanical but involve systems, electrical and software.
  • Building: Communicate with manufacturing, service and vendors to create quality components that have been designed for assembly.
  • Analyzing: Execute the right balance of analysis and execution to push forward designs that are not only technically sound, but developed with time efficiency.
  • Releasing: Work with our operations team to maintain the bill of materials, select the right vendors, and ensure that those parts meet specification before they go into the product.
  • Learning: Develop and follow processes to safely and efficiently correct problems that arise in the field. In addition, maintain an attitude of continuous learning and curiosity to make the most of Carbon’s dynamic and cutting edge environment that seeks to do what hasn’t been done before.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in a production environment / comfort working with technicians on the manufacturing floor as well as in the lab.
  • Understanding of product quality metrics and methods including GD&T, DFMEA, Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Experience working with overseas contract manufacturers and remotely directing activities during pilot and production builds.
